In a highly competitive call with 359 applications, Modvion was selected as one of 61 projects where the Innovation Fund has allocated a total of €2.9 billion. The selected projects are estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 221 million tons over a 10 year period.

With support from the Innovation Fund, Modvion will scale up to supply the growing onshore wind market. The project is set to establish series production of wooden wind turbine towers with hub heights of up to 200 meters, designed for turbines of 6MWs and above.

“The Innovation Fund grant will enable Modvion to scale production capacity to meet the demand from the European wind industry,” said Maria-Lina Hedlund, CEO at Modvion. “Our towers enable taller wind turbines to increase the efficiency and profitability of wind energy, all while replacing hard-to-abate steel and concrete.”

The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technologies. It supports projects with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen Europe’s resilience through cleantech manufacturing.

“Increasing renewable energy infrastructure and production is strategically vital for the EU. Modvion contributes to that build out while bringing together two strong European industries, wood and wind power.” adds Maria-Lina Hedlund.

Modvion now enters the GAP phase to finalize and sign the grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The grant agreement is planned to be signed by the end of Q1 2026.
