Vortex hits the target with new SERIES wind modelling product: 3km resolution and correlation warranty

Vortex, a leading provider of online wind modelling services, has announced today the launch of a new product to complete its current portfolio of on-demand products (MAPS, MAST & FARM): Vortex SERIES.

Centred on the user's point and with a 3km resolution, Vortex SERIES is thought to offer the highest resolution on the market and also includes a very convenient concept: a correlation warranty.

Designed to meet professional needs

Wind professionals regularly perform MCP methods regularly to extrapolate their local, short-term measurements to make them long-term representative. With first-hand experience in the industry, Vortex is well aware of the difficulties of such a task. Especially, how hard it sometimes is to find good quality, long-term reference time series near your met. mast location.

Such reference time series should have two important characteristics: they should be consistent over time (no change of sensors or environment) and they should be representative of the same wind regime as your measurements, thus ensuring they correlate well with your measured data. By designing Vortex SERIES, the company has addressed these two requirements to ensure its customers’ satisfaction.

“Vortex decided to launch SERIES after listening to our users, who have generally been highly satisfied with the mesoscale time series included up until now in our FARM product,” says German Delgado, Vortex’s Commercial Director.

“We decided to launch SERIES as an independent product and, following advice from wind sector professionals, we focused on the aspect that was of most concern to them: achieving the best possible correlation with measured data,” added Pau Casso, Technical Director.

Highest resolution available

In the company’s search for the best climate representativeness, it scaled Vortex SERIES, which are fully consistent over time, down to 3km. To the company’s knowledge, this is the highest resolution offered anywhere on the market.

It also introduced the "no distance to the nearest node" characteristic. Since SERIES (as with all Vortex products) are computed on demand (rather than being pre-computed), their computational domain is centred on a user’s point of interest, making the distance to the nearest node equal to zero.

Correlation warranty

Vortex’s Commercial Director explains that his company is committed to providing reliable data and is prepared to back up this claim with a quality guarantee. "Vortex pledges that SERIES will give you the best correlation with your measurements, and if they do not, you will not have to pay anything,” he reveals. “Prior to any purchase, Vortex INTERFACE allows you to download for free a six-month sample for you to check that our model results correlate with your data. If such a test does not satisfy you, the remaining purchasing process will be aborted”.

Other attractive characteristics of SERIES include selectable time zones for easy MCP application and monthly updates for you to use your latest collected data. Vortex SERIES are delivered in less than 24 hours at an extremely competitive price.

Some of Vortex’s customers have already had the opportunity to put SERIES through its paces and are more than satisfied with its performance. “My last project was very complex and did not correlate with the neighbouring met. masts. Average wind speeds were very high. Nevertheless, the correlation with the data provided by SERIES was good,” reports one user from Alstom Power’s Wind Engineering Department, one of Vortex’s very first customers to test out the new product.

“We currently have around 200 users including many of the sector’s leading players around the world (Iberdrola, Acciona, Vestas, etc.). Our dynamic approach has been well received by the industry, which also appreciates Vortex’s ability to understand our professional wind customers’ requirements,” concludes Vortex’s CEO, Pep Moreno.

Vortex comprises former wind professionals (with more than 15 years of experience), atmospheric physicists and computer experts and started its technology development in 2007. Vortex’s wind modelling technology is based on WRF, a state-of-the-art, non-linear flow code developed through a collaborative effort by several atmospheric research centres and supported by an active community of more than 10,000 users.

Vortex vision is fully aligned with the recommendations of Working Group 1 of the European Wind Energy Platform regarding wind assessment research for the coming years.
