Global Wind Day, the five year old annual even jointly organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), will be observed Saturday with an extra emphasis on putting pressure on world leaders to fulfill their clean energy promises.

This year's observance coincides with 17-18 June G8 summit in Northern Ireland. To make the connection between the two events even tighter, Wind Day advocates have set up a Facebook page through which interested parties can directly message either their respective leader or the summit itself.

Members of the Council and association say while the leaders of the G8 nations talk a good game when it comes to renewable, they nevertheless continue to provide six times more subsidies to fossil fuel producers than they do to those fostering the use of renewables.

Global Wind Day was established to foster education about wind power, and will be celebrated at hundreds of activities and events around the world.

In addition to its founders, Global Wind Day is supported by the United Nations, the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union, and wind organizations the world over.

For instance, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is marking the fifth annual Global Wind Day to launch its second annual Power of Wind Blog Contest with bursary prizes for students entering post-secondary education.

CanWEA is inviting students from across Canada to submit a 300 word blog on the subject of Building a clean energy future. Students are being asked to use their creativity and write about how they are or can become part of a renewable energy future.

"We are very proud to celebrate the growing contribution that wind energy is making around the world and right here in Canada," said CanWEA President Robert Hornung.

"Wind energy projects are right now injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into local communities and providing high quality jobs for college graduates across the country," he continued. "The Power of Wind Blog contest ... gives Canadian students a chance to join the conversation and share their views on renewable energy The contest last year attracted hundreds of thoughtful and creative entries on the power of wind."

First prize is a $2,000 bursary for post-secondary studies. The second and third prizes are bursaries worth $500 and $250 respectively.

Participants will have the opportunity to submit their blog entries until 15 September 15 2013 and the winners will once again be announced during CanWEA's Annual Conference and Exhibition being held 7-10 October 2013 in Toronto.
