NYK to Purchase CDR Credits From Graphyte

NYK has signed an agreement with U.S.-based carbon-removal startup Graphyte, Inc.  to purchase carbon dioxide removal credits generated by the company’s large-scale carbon-removal Loblolly project in the United States.

Currently underway in Arkansas, the Loblolly project applies Graphyte’s proprietary carbon-casting technology to dry and compress biomass residue generated from agriculture, forestry, and wood processing. The carbon contained in these materials is converted into a stable solid form and safely stored underground for long-term sequestration, enabling highly durable carbon removal.

CDR credits generated by this project are certified through a rigorous system of measurement, reporting, and verification conducted by independent third parties, ensuring a high level of transparency and reliability.

The NYK Group is advancing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions, including CO₂, toward achieving net-zero emissions. These efforts include maximizing energy efficiency and transitioning from conventional fossil fuels to next-generation fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol. Despite these continuing efforts, some residual emissions in the shipping industry cannot be avoided. By offsetting them with CDR credits, NYK aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions.

Going forward, in line with the NYK position paper on CDR credits, the NYK Group will continue to promote initiatives that contribute to reducing GHG emissions through various credits, working with our customers to realize a decarbonized society.
