energy saving

Chavez’s Venezuela turning to a greener tomorrow?

President Hugo Chavez has begun talking about the opportunities of a renewable energy industry in Venezuela and the world’s need to cut back on its petroleum consumption.  Among his measures are to divert oil revenues to a solar panel production scheme, handling out energy saving light bulbs, and curbing domestic use of oil.

Venezuela a member of OPEC and home to some of the cheapest gas in the world has traditionally had nothing to worry about when it comes to energy consumption. Chavez has however now made this part of his leftist agenda, after conferring extensively with Cuba’s Castro. Castro’s Cuba has long been dependent on oil imports and therefore experience with energy conservation.

Chavez is looking for ways to increase use of public transport, including changing the price of fuel at the pump from the subsidized 12 cents per gallon which has long been a constant. Chavez sees environmental pollution as a very real long term problem for the world.
