Republic of Ireland to spend big money on wave energy

The country plans a large initiative to spend 25 million Euro on ocean energy.

The seas surrounding the emerald isle have has been harsh and therefore would serve as an ideal place for wave energy. Looking across the Irish Sea, Scotland and England are both developing large marine and ocean wave park projects. Now the Irish government is looking to get in on the act. The 26 million Euro will be invested over the coming 3 years. According to the Irish energy minister Eamon Ryan , there will also be a feed in tariff for wave energy. The level of these would be 220 Euro per MW hour.

Ryan also said; “The aim behind this R&D funding is to enable Ireland to win the race of developing a full-scale, commercially viable ocean energy device for generating electricity. "

The money will go towards research, as well as a test site and commercialization of wave technology.
