Gordon Brown wants to charge ahead with United Kingdom’s drive towards renewable energy

The Prime Minister wants to continue to strive for the goal of making 20% energy production come from renewable energy by 2020.

Brown hopes that this will cement his place at the top of the renewable energy worldwide community of leaders. John Hutton a business and enterprise secretary has been lobbying within the government to show that there are practical issues which would hamper the achievement of these goals. Brown would like to be able to put a strong foot forward at the conference for a follow-up agreement to the Kyoto Protocol by keeping his domestic agenda as green as possible. Amongst this are big plans for wave and wind farms. Offshore wind farms have met with resistance from shipping and the Ministry of Defense. There is also an idea to supply yet more of England’s power from tidal power for which locations such as the Thames might be suited. It should be noted that the United Kingdom is at present one of the leading countries when it comes to wave and ocean related power source research and projects. The initial problems will be in early years where the cost will be high to get these initiatives out of their infancy stages. However once they take off it is hoped that the vast quantities of wave and wind that flows around and across the British Isles will power this technology and make these goals feasible.
