Intersolar Mexico has established itself as the leading B2B platform for solutions and networking in the Mexican solar market. Against the backdrop of the Federal Electricity Commission’s (CFE) announcement of a historic USD 8.177 billion investment to expand the transmission grid, it acts as an essential meeting point to analyse how this infrastructure will enhance renewable energy integration, attract investment, strengthen nearshoring, and open new opportunities for the country’s energy development, among other key topics.

A number of prominent industry leaders attended the official presentation of the event, including: Matilde Saldivar, Show Director at Informa Markets; Marisol Oropeza, Spokesperson for Intersolar Mexico; Valeria Amezcua, President of the Mexican Agrovoltaic Network and Félix Delgado, Research Analyst, Solar PV LatAm | Power & Renewables at Wood Mackenzie.

Intersolar Mexico will take place simultaneously with The Green Expo and Aquatech Mexico, according to an announcement by Matilde Saldivar. These are co-located events that together form the largest gathering of renewable energy and clean technology professionals in Mexico.

“This year we will bring together more than 400 national and international companies presenting a comprehensive portfolio of solutions for the industrial, commercial, and governmental sectors, with the goal of optimising processes and strengthening competitiveness. We also expect more than 10,000 professionals from diverse industries to attend” said Ms Saldivar.

The Intersolar Mexico Conference will serve as a key platform to foster dialogue on Mexico’s energy sector, promoting deeper discussions on the development of the solar industry, according to Marisol Oropeza. More than 30 experts will contribute their specialised knowledge and strategic perspectives through conferences and panels. The strength of the programme lies in its diversity, bringing together technical, business, academic, and policy viewpoints to analyse the present and future of the industry at a decisive moment for the country, especially in light of potential policy changes that could advance the adoption of solar and storage technologies. The event will also highlight the majority of female experts participating in the sector.

Meanwhile, at the Intersolar Stage, exhibitors and partner organisations will deliver presentations free of charge highlighting products and services with strong implementation potential. This space will also host daily technical workshops on solar thermal, electrical storage and photovoltaics, along with networking sessions.

The Innovation Forum is a space where presentations about cutting-edge technologies, new developments, and research projects for the Mexican market will be held also free of charge.

For example, agrovoltaics represents a sustainable and holistic solution to address climate change, preserve biodiversity, reduce land-use change, increase freshwater availability, and even promote agroecological and sustainable programs aligned with global needs, according to Valeria Amezcua.

“Maximising land use has become a priority in many countries, and in Mexico we are already working in different states to develop projects that combine agricultural production with clean energy generation, seeking to deliver significant economic, social, and environmental benefits” said Ms Amezcua.

Although Mexico failed to reach its target of 35 percent electricity generation from clean sources by 2024, Félix Delgado believes that the country how has the opportunity to accelerate its energy transition, with plans underway to add between 13.6 GW and 16.7 GW of new renewable capacity by 2030.

“Mexico’s energy challenge is no longer just about increasing capacity, but ensuring that clean energy reaches all productive sectors under clear rules and with a robust grid” said Mr Delgado. “The nearshoring boom demands reliable and competitive electricity. Distributed and solar generation will be key to ensuring that the country does not miss this historic window of industrial development.”

Organized by Solar Promotion International GmbH, Freiburg Management and Marketing International GmbH (FMMI), and Informa Markets, Intersolar Mexico will be a strategic gathering for the solar industry, bringing together leading voices to ensure an enriching, interdisciplinary dialogue oriented toward concrete solutions to maximise the solar potential of Mexico and Latin America.

The event comprehensively promotes sustainability - from the construction of exhibition stands featuring recyclable, reusable, and durable materials, to the curation of conferences and activities addressing innovation, clean energy, and sustainable development.

These efforts not only aim to minimise environmental impact but also inspire the industry to adopt more responsible practices, generate a positive community impact, and strengthen exhibitors’ and visitors’ commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

Just a few days previously, a panel of experts, consisting of Marisol Oropeza, Spokesperson for Intersolar Mexico; Gilberto Sánchez, Vice President of the National Solar Energy Association (ANES); and Elisa Márquez, General Director of Dobotica, discussed the expansion of the sector in Mexico in a webinar entitled The Prelude to Distributed Photovoltaic Generation 2.0 in Mexico.

Mexico is on the verge of “Distributed Generation 2.0”, according to Gilberto Sánchez, with 5,000 megawatts installed by the first half of 2025, equivalent to 8.15 percent of the maximum demand recorded in the National Electric System (SEN).

“This figure reflects not only the sector’s expansion but also compliance with regulatory thresholds” said Mr Sánchez. “Since Resolution 142 of 2017, it was established that once participation surpassed 5 percent of maximum demand, it was necessary to review technical requirements. Today, with more than five thousand megawatts, Mexico enters Distributed Generation 2.0.”

This adjustment is a response to demand from the sector, but also to the current limits of the national grid,  according to Elisa Márquez.

“Adding 200 kilowatts makes sense for many commercial clients; however, it still does not meet the needs of the industrial sector” said Ms Márquez. “The key is that this change requires greater professionalisation and opens new opportunities for those who know how to anticipate.”

Márquez also highlighted the progress in self-consumption that allows the development of projects from 0.7 MW up to 20 MW, under simplified procedures and with greater legal certainty.

“For many users, 700 kilowatts do not generate a significant impact, but with self-consumption of up to 20 MW, an attractive landscape opens up that can even draw international investment and trigger large-scale projects in Mexico” she added.

Another central point of the debate was the incorporation of storage as a recognised activity in the electricity sector, at the same level as generation and distribution. This represents a strategic opportunity both for system reliability and for the development of new business models.

Although technical and regulatory challenges remain, the viability of projects will depend on the capacity of distribution and transmission grids, which, they argued, requires a case-by-case analysis.

“Storage now assumes rights and obligations, which strengthens investment conditions” said Gilberto Sánchez. “It is a fundamental step to integrate hybrid solutions that combine renewable generation with energy backup.”

From a business perspective, integrating storage systems not only multiplies the value of a photovoltaic project but also allows compliance with the Grid Code, management of demand peaks, and delivery of energy resilience to sectors such as hotels, shopping malls, or data centres.

According to experts, the second wave of distributed generation will not be immediate or simple, but it will mark a leap in maturity for the sector. In this regard, storage will play a key role in supporting the national electricity system, making it a priority to understand its application and scope.

Marisol Oropeza emphasised the importance of attending Intersolar Mexico 2025 as a unique opportunity for all stakeholders in the sector to gain first-hand knowledge of the regulatory, technological, and business changes that will shape the immediate future of distributed generation, self-consumption, and storage in Mexico. Passes can be purchased through the website: https://intersolar.mx/registro

Driving sustainable energy development in Mexico requires the ability of companies, regulators, and users to adapt to new technical requirements, ensure project feasibility, and seize the investment opportunities emerging in this scenario, according to the panellists. Thus the sixth edition of Intersolar Mexico will be a strategic meeting point to delve into the challenges and opportunities of distributed generation, self-consumption, and storage in the country.

The Intersolar Mexico Exhibition and International Conference will be held in parallel with The GREEN Expo and Aquatech Mexico. Together, these three events make up the largest B2B platform in Mexico and Latin America, with the participation of more than 400 companies presenting solutions for the industrial, business, and government sectors.
