T-Solar kicks off international expansion with a €3,500 million investment until 2015

The T-Solar Group has started to expand its operations overseas with an 8 MW PV installation in Puglia, Italy. This is the start of a global plan involving an investment of over €3,500 million between now and 2015. The group’s goal is to exceed 800 MW of installed capacity in Spain, Italy, France, the US and North Africa.

The group’s plans were announced  by the MD of T-Solar, Juan Laso, in a press conference at the GENERA 09 trade fair, during which he also announced plans to install a total of 50 MW in ground and roof-mounted PV plants in Spain and target markets including Italy, the US and France.

T-Solar’s new PV projects will use thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon modules manufactured in the group’s facilities in Galicia, Spain. In order to meet demand for these modules, two new machines with be installed in the plant and the workforce will be increased to 190 employees this month. In June, the plant will start operating 365 days a year. It is planned that the plant will have the capacity to produce a module every 45 seconds, while its capacity will be doubled to approximately 90 MW per annum as from 2010.

New PV glass

During GENERA 09 T-Solar also presented a new PV glass designed specifically for integration into building architecture. This new product consists of laminated glass amorphous silicon modules, which can be used in place of conventional architectural features such as curtain walls, façade coverings or flat roofing.

The new glass offers added value because aside from offering the normal benefits of traditional materials (i.e. solar protection, heat insulation, sound proofing and security), the new material also generates electricity. Furthermore, T-Solar emphasises that its new product is highly versatile because parts can be tailor made to meet each customer's specific requirements.

T-Solar currently operates 28 PV plants in Spain, which, to date, have generated over 100 GWh of electricity, equivalent to the annual demand of a city of 60,000 inhabitants. The group forecasts it will exceed 212 GWh in 2009.
