Solar thermal for all as Austrian company develops plastic collector

The young Austrian firm, Sunlumo, has developed a plastic collector which can be used in a conventional thermosiphonic solar thermal system. It believes its One-World Solar Collector represents “an important step” to a single standard solar collector for the whole world.

Some 90 percent of all existing solar facilities worldwide work to the thermosiphonic principle. “Water circulates without the use of additional pumps and thus with no auxiliary energy to functions [sic]”, Sunlumo CEO, Robert Buchinger explains. His company has now made the solar thermal system, which has conventionally used glass collectors, even simpler by developing an innovative collector made entirely from plastic.

The young green technology company from Perg (Upper Austria) says this unique product is ideal for the volume market. “This development is a further important step for the implementation of a single standard solar collector for the whole world”, says Buchinger.

The One-World Solar Collector made from plastic is resistant to thermal and climatic influences, light weight and is 50 percent cheaper to produce. The collector is suitable for universal one-world use and is thus easy to integrate in the solar energy system.

“The possibility for linking a One-World Solar Collector with thermosiphonic systems is an all-important breakthrough in opening up the world markets and it is simultaneously a major step forwards for the implementation of this innovative product”, Buchinger adds.

China market leader

Thermosiphonic systems dominate the world market and China is the world market leader for solar thermal systems with a share of around 80 percent.

Thermosiphonic systems are used virtually exclusively in China. Sunlumo is continuously developing its business relationships and contacts with China from an own representation office in the Hyundai Motor Tower in Beijing.

“The solar thermal collector market is growing by around 20 percent a year”, Buchinger says. The annual requirement for solar thermal collector surface areas will have jumped from 50 million to around 400 million square metres by the year 2021. The fully automated production facility for plastic collectors will allow manufacture of some 500,000 one-world solar collectors per year and plant. Sunlumo will deliver plants to make its new collector on a turnkey basis.
