The project, which spanned approximately 18 months from planning through completion, reflects DWT's ongoing commitment to developing the industry's safest and most technically proficient workforces. The facility supports more than 200 trainees annually and serves as a cornerstone of DWT's technician development programme.
The renovated facility now features a fully functional Siemens 2.3-93 nacelle complete with hub and downtower assembly, an MHI 1000A simulator, basic electrical and hydraulic training, intermediate troubleshooting rooms and a 5 MW solar inverter, providing technicians with real-world training opportunities across multiple renewable energy technologies. DWT also expanded its fundamental electrical and hydraulic training areas, and its intermediate and advanced technical training classrooms, creating additional space for hands-on learning and skills development.
A new state-of-the-art training tower further enhances the facility's capabilities, allowing up to six trainees to participate simultaneously and enabling instructors to conduct multiple rescue scenarios at once.
The project required extensive planning and coordination, including transportation of the nacelle, foundation reinforcement, building remodels, and equipment installation. Despite the complexity of the renovation, DWT successfully maintained all climb, safety, and technical training programs throughout construction.
“In 28 years of working in wind energy, I have not seen nor been involved with the buildout of an independent service provider training facility such as DWT's” said Russ Leach, Vice President of Enterprise Systems, Processes & Quality. “The commitment to training by DWT, both globally and in the United States, is unique and helps set us apart from anybody else in the industry. I couldn't be more proud of the training team and everyone who supported this effort. We were able to continue all of our climb training, safety training, and technical training programmes even while the remodelling and installation of the nacelle and other equipment were ongoing.”
DWT's Training Centre is part of a comprehensive development system that combines classroom instruction, online learning, hands-on technical training, and structured on-the-job experience. Together, these elements ensure technicians demonstrate competency before performing work in the field, supporting DWT's commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence across the renewable energy industry.
