The order for the Withernwick facility will consist of nine REpower MM82 turbines, while the slightly larger development at Hyndburn will consist of twelve MM82 turbines. The turbines at these sites have a rated capacity of 2.05 MW per turbine.
Executives with both companies described the deal as the start of a meaningful long-term relationship.
“We are delighted to be working with Energiekontor UK,” said Rick Eggleston, Managing Director of REpower UK. “We hope that Withernwick and Hyndburn wind farms will mark the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship between the two companies.”
Meanwhile Guy Wilson, Managing Director of Energiekontor UK, described the order in foundational terms, describing it as something, “I am sure that we can build on”.
It is estimated that the larger twelve turbine Hyndburn wind farm will generate around 70 million kWh of electricity per year which is the equivalent to the estimated electricity requirements of 52 percent of the households in the surrounding area.
The total capacity for both wind farms will be 43.05 MW, providing enough electricity to power 24,000 homes.
Now that the contracts have been signed, construction is due to start in the second half of 2011 at Hyndburn and the first half of 2012 at Withernwick. Both sites are scheduled for completion in 2012.
The Energiekontor Group has built 74 wind farms to date, comprising of over 450 wind turbines and a total power output of around 500 MW. In total this represents an investment of over €720 million.
Energiekontor UK has built two wind farms in the UK and has many projects in planning, the company said in a statement.
