Devon Homes First in UK to Switch to 100% Renewable Liquid Gas Blend

A housing estate in Exeter has become the first in the UK to switch to a 100% renewable liquid gas blend for home heating. Residents at Seaward Park, a 19-home estate, switched to bioLPG in December 2025.

They are heating their homes exactly as before, but now with up to 80% lower carbon emissions than with conventional LPG.

The South West has the highest proportion of off-grid households in England at around 24%, many of which are in rural areas where properties rely on oil or LPG tanks for heating.

As the government considers the future of home heating, heat pumps are widely promoted as the primary option. However, impact assessments suggest around one in five UK homes may not be technically suitable for a heat pump, rising to a third once affordability is considered.

Ivan Trevor of Flogas Britain, which supplies the estate, says, “This shows that off-grid homes don't have to rip out their heating systems to reduce their emissions."

The bioLPG is supplied using a certified ‘mass balance’ system, meaning that for every liter a customer buys, the same amount of renewable gas is added into the wider UK supply chain.

Renewable and conventional LPG are stored and transported through the same tanks and delivery network, so the exact mix in any one delivery may vary, but the total amount of renewable gas purchased is genuinely produced and supplied into the UK market.

Because bioLPG is a drop-in fuel that works in exactly the same way as conventional LPG, homeowners can continue using their existing boiler, tank and pipework as normal while lowering the carbon emissions associated with their heating.

Mark Stubbs, a resident at Seaward Park, said, “On our estate, we wanted a heating solution that made sense for our homes. This 100% BioLPG tariff gives us the reliability and performance we expect, but with a lower carbon impact than standard LPG.

“It means we can heat the house properly and stay comfortable, while feeling confident we’ve made a more responsible choice for the long term. For us, it’s about doing things properly - without making life complicated."

“BioLPG is a practical solution that works right now, with the boilers people already have,” Trevor adds.

According to Liquid Gas UK, 25 million liters of renewable liquid gas is already being supplied nationwide – a figure that is set to rise by 40% in the coming year.

"For rural communities where alternatives like heat pumps aren't always practical, bioLPG offers a way to significantly cut carbon emissions without the disruption and expense of replacing entire heating systems,” Trevor says.

“With thousands of Southwest homes off the mains gas grid, solutions like this need to be part of the conversation about the future of rural heating."
