The distribution of liquefied biogas at the station has already begun. Compressed gas is estimated to be available from July 16,2025.
"The Kajaani gas filling station is part of Gasum's strategy to make biogas available on all of Finland's main transport routes. Stations in Eastern Finland are few, but the Kajaani station eases the situation. With the opening of the station, logistics companies will be able to offer low-emission transports to their customers on an increasing number of routes", says Juho Kurra, Head of Business, Traffic Finland, Gasum.
Effective emission reductions with biogas
On average, the lifecycle emissions of biogas are 90% lower than those of traditional fossil fuels, such as diesel. This makes biogas an effective way to reduce emissions for services that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy-duty transport.
The emissions of a single heavy-duty vehicle are many times higher than those of a passenger car, as the driving distances are much longer and the loads are larger. That is why logistics companies play a key role in reducing road transport emissions in Finland.
Gasum's strategic goal is to bring seven terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable gas per year to the Nordic market by 2027, which is about three times more than now. This would mean a combined annual emission reduction of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide for Gasum's customers.
