Google to finance geothermal research

Dan Reicher of Google's philanthropic arm has hinting of the new direction the tech giant might take in its renewables funding.

Google.org, which is the search engine companies investment company for renewable energy last year announced its renewable energy cheaper than coal initiative. Since then it has invested in eSolar and Makani Power, a solar and wind power company respectively. The word on the street according to Reicher is that Google.org will soon make an announcement in the coming months about an investment in geothermal power. To give you an idea of the size of investment, the first two companies received 10 million USD combined.

Reicher was quoted as saying; "We don't have the constraints of venture capital firms, with the usual three-to-six-year exit strategy and need for return," "We're looking for higher-risk, higher-payoff investments."

He also expressed interest in investing in bringing cellulose ethanol into the mainstream commercial setting.
