Meghalaya State in India set to tap into its hydroelectric potential

The state which is located in the north east of India has a potential of 3 GW of hydroelectric power generation. The State’s Deputy Chief Minister has asked large firms to come and give proposals about investments they might like to make in the state for hydro power projects. The hope is that private investors can come in and modernize and invest in small and micro scale hydro power. The state has an enviable position , having the resources for many different types of renewable energy including biomass, solar and biogas amongst others. The state has also come up with the idea of funding surveys and studies to identify potential sites to further lure more investors. So far the state has been able to get 185 MW of power against its 610 MW of needs. The state has been buying in power from a neighboring state during the dry season but has had to subsidize this to the tune of Rs 2 per unit of power. Even though those 3 GW sounds like a great deal of potential , it is but 3 % of the total potential of India. This could be soon as good news considering the amount of power that India is going to be needing in the future to power its growth.
