New Zealand drought affects power generation abilities

Especially the hydro sector has been hit on the Southern Island as the water levels have fallen. The country has already formed a national electricity industry working group to come up with strategies to deal with the crisis. As hydro electricity is responsible for 65 percent of power generation in New Zealand , drops in water levels are a particularly critical problem. The current water levels are only 78 percent of the average. There has also been a power cable shutdown, which has reduced the amount of electricity which is able to be transferred from the southern to northern island. The South is the producer, while the North is the dominant consumer of power.

The Prime Minister is also receiving updates on the water levels. Alternative strategies being considered are bringing in diesel power generators or power barges. This is however an expensive option and requires quiet some lead time. As it is summer right now the lakes are filling up for the winter ahead. However there has been less rainfall than normal , adding to this is the fact that there is little more predicted. Spot electricity prices have been at record highs. However a good week of rain according to experts could once again fill up the reserves. Another strategy being considered is reduction of power consumption, although it remains to be seen whether this is necessary.
