EDP to sell 20 – 25% of renewables unit

Energias de Portugal will attempt to sell a significant chunk of its renewable energy unit via a capital increase. This is viewed as a bid to raise further capital for future investment plans. The company is already the fourth largest in the world when it comes to wind power. There will be a initial public offering of EDP Renováveis, S.L.. This EDP Group is a holding for renewable energy subsidiaries NEO Energia and Horizon Wind Energy.

According to EDP Chief Executive Antonio Mexia ; "The global energy market is changing and renewables are an unstoppable tendency,"

Compared to the 34 percent that wind and hydro represent of the earnings today (EBITDA) , it is planned that by 2010 these should add up to 45 percent. The following banks have been appointed to carry out the IPO; Morgan Stanley, UBS, Citigroup and Portuguese banks BES Investimento, Caixa BI.
