Valencia, world capital of photovoltaic solar energy

The 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition / 5th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion kicks off on Monday 6 September and welcomes the global PV community to Valencia (Spain). The event is expected to attract 4,500 conference delegates and around 40,000 visitors for the PV Industry Exhibition.

The 25th EU PVSEC / WCPEC-5 will be chaired by the Conference General Chairman Dr. Giovanni Federigo De Santi (Director, Institute for Energy (IE) JRC - European Commission), and the Conference Vice Chairmen Prof. Makoto Konagai (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan), and Dr. Robert Walters (US Naval Research Lab, Washington DC, USA).

“This World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion will bring together the three most important global scientific and strategic PV Conferences: the 25th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition, the 36th US IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference and the 20th Asia/Pacific PV Science and Engineering Conference,” said Dr. De Santi. “We are confident that this 5th World Conference will provide the best forum to present the latest progress in PV development and manufacturing. Exciting visions of how massive deployment of photovoltaic systems will look in 10 years from now will be outlined.”

Over 1,600 presentations

The Technical Programme Chairman Dr. Heinz Ossenbrink (European Commission, DG JRC, Ispra, Italy) and the Technical Programme Vice Chairmen Dr. Michio Kondo (AIST- National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Tokyo, Japan) and David Wilt (Airforce Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, NM, USA), guided the set up of the comprehensive Conference Programme. They were supported by the International Scientific Committee, made up of 154 representatives from the global scientific community. The soaring number of 76 Sessions with 31 Plenary, 312 Oral, and 1,300 Visual Poster Presentations takes this leading international PV Conference to a new level. The Conference Programme for the 25th EU PVSEC / WCPEC-5 will include presentations on:

>Advanced Photovoltaics: New Concepts and Ultra-High Efficiency

>Wafer-Based Silicon Solar Cells and Materials Technology

>Thin Film Solar Cells

>Components for PV Systems

>PV Systems

>PV Taking Off: Large-Scale Deployment

963 exhibitors from around the world

The PV Industry Exhibition will spread over 8 large exhibition halls at the Feria Valencia fairground, covering an exhibition area of 80,000 sqm. 963 exhibitors from around the world will present their new products, technical solutions and services to a global audience.

“12 years after 2nd World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion in Vienna, Austria, it is again Europe’s turn to welcome the global PV community and to host the WCPEC-5,” said EU PVSEC Executive Director, Peter Helm. “The impressive Conference Programme reflects the enormous interest of the global PV community to present and discuss the latest scientific results and technical developments. The Programme underlines the relevance of this event for the further development of photovoltaics.”

“We welcome all exhibitors from around the world, making this the largest EU PVSEC Exhibition ever held. We are convinced that this 25th EU PVSEC / WCPEC-5 will launch new ideas and will give a strong impetus to meet the challenges for the PV industry and for the global scientific community,” Helm continued.

At the Opening Session on Monday, 6 September 2010, Dr. Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and President of the Solar Impulse project will deliver the Keynote Speech with the title: ‘Pioneering Spirit for Inventing the Future – Around the World in a Solar Airplane’. Dr. Piccard will talk about the Solar Impulse project, its objectives, status and recent milestones as well as its potential impact on the future of renewable energies, and photovoltaic solar energy in particular.

Only 10 Years to reach 20/20 targets

The PV Policy Debate ‘Only 10 years to reach the 20/20 Renewable Targets’ will be another highlight during the 25th EU PVSEC / WCPEC-5, taking place on Tuesday, 7 September 2010. The European Union has set the goal of providing 20% of its energy demand using renewable sources by the end of this decade. This would probably translate into around 35% of renewable electricity. Similar ambitious plans are being brought forward in the US, Japan, China and India, ensuring continued innovation and global growth rates for PV in the coming years. The Policy Debate will provide the best forum to present the latest progress in PV Solar implementation plans. The visions of how the massive deployment of photovoltaic systems will look in 10 years time will be outlined.

This global PV solar event is supported by European and international organisations such as the European Commission, UNESCO - United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation - Natural Sciences Sector, WCRE - World Council for Renewable Energy, the International Photovoltaic Equipment Association (IPVEA) and by a close institutional cooperation with the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA). The Technical Programme is coordinated by the European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre.
