The ceremony was led by the President of the Republic of Chile, José Antonio Kast Rist, and was attended by a number of national and local authorities, including the Minister of Energy, Ximena Rincón; the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Ximena Lincolao; and the Ambassador of Spain to Chile, Laura Oroz, among other officials.
With 3.5 GWh of storage capacity already in operation, Elena is the largest battery storage facility in the Americas and, according to the company’s roadmap through 2028, is expected to expand its capacity to 7 GWh. It is the most ambitious project developed by Grenergy to date and currently comprises 624 containers and 6,240 batteries.
The facility forms part of Oasis de Atacama, a platform that has also been expanded to 2.5 GW of solar capacity and 14.1 GWh of storage under the company’s recently announced roadmap through 2028. Oasis de Atacama is the origin of the hybridisation model that Grenergy is replicating in central Chile through Oasis Central (1.4 GW of solar capacity and 5.1 GWh of storage) and exporting to Spain through the Iberian Oasis platform. Together, the OASIS platforms total 5 GW of solar capacity and 22 GWh of storage.
Elena marks the beginning of the largest energy hub that Grenergy is developing in northern Chile. The project will provide 24/7 dispatchable energy, strengthen supply security and flexibility, and accelerate industrial electrification by reducing dependence on volatile fuels while ensuring cleaner, more stable and more competitive energy.
In addition, it lays the foundation for attracting digital infrastructure and positioning Chile as an AI and data center hub for Latin America.
Grenergy, supported by its capacity to generate clean and competitive energy, has unveiled further details of GR Data, its data centre platform in Chile. The platform has a 1 GW IT pipeline.
One of its first developments will be Atacama Data, an AI training campus located near Elena, which will start with 400 MW IT and be scalable to 1 GW IT. The facility will enable large-scale AI model training powered by renewable energy and with no water consumption. This project will be complemented by the cloud campuses Polpaico Campus Norte and Alto Jahuel Campus Sur, which together will contribute 600 MW IT alongside the country’s main connectivity hubs.
With strategic locations, secured connections and competitive energy, Grenergy is establishing itself as a key partner for hyperscalers and as a driver of Chile’s next-generation digital infrastructure.
Grenergy has operated in Chile since 2012 and has become one of the country’s three largest international investors. The company has invested $2.8 billion in Chile and plans to invest an additional $2 billion over the next two years, bringing its total investment in the country to $4.8 billion.
