AREVA strengthens position in offshore wind market with €400 million contract

Carbon-free power generator, AREVA, has won a contract worth €400 million with Trianel, an association comprising German urban electric utilities, to supply forty 5-MW M5000 turbines for the Borkum West II offshore wind farm located in the German North Sea.

Under the terms of the agreement, AREVA will also provide commissioning, testing and maintenance services. Foundations, transport and erection offshore are excluded from the scope. The contract comprises an additional forty M5000 turbines within the year 2011. “Trianel’s decision to invest in the Borkum West II project confirms the trust in the quality and the reliability of the offshore wind turbines designed and manufactured by AREVA,” commented Horstick, Managing Director of Trianel. In December, Trianel announced it had arranged $724 million (€547 million) in financing for Borkum West II, tapping 11 banks including Unicredit SpA and Dexia AG for a loan.

Situated 45 km off the northern coast of the island of Borkum, the wind farm is the biggest wind energy project in the German North Sea. It is directly adjacent to Alpha Ventus, Germany's pilot offshore wind farm where AREVA supplied six wind turbines.

Operations are scheduled to start at the turn of the year 2012/2013. Once completed, the turbines will generate a total output of 200 MW, enough to provide some 200,000 households with green electricity.

“AREVA is thrilled to have jointly developed an efficient offshore solution with Trianel. We are pleased that eleven leading banks have committed to finance this project. We look forward to the successful deployment of our state-of-the-art offshore wind turbines with long-term services essential for the wind farm’s management,” said Anil Srivastava, CEO of the AREVA Renewables.

Elsewhere, AREVA has signed a contract with Wetfeet Offshore Windenergy to supply 80 M5000 turbines of a value of over €800 million for the Global Tech 1 offshore wind farm, as well as maintenance services and operations. The group has also been chosen for the construction of the first offshore project in France along the Albâtre Coast (105 MW). In total, the group reports that nearly 250 M5000 turbines have been chosen to equip large European offshore parks. AREVA describes itself as “a pioneer in offshore technology”, and has set a goal of becoming the leader in this emerging market.
