Under the terms of the agreement, Hydro‑Québec will purchase all of the electricity output of the plant. This extends the existing PPA between Hydro‑Québec and SFC, which has been in place since 2001, demonstrating the long-term demand for SFC’s baseload renewable power and the rapidly advancing bioeconomy in Quebec. SFC is a subsidiary of Greenleaf Power, a leading energy transition company focused on recycling biomass waste into renewable, reliable energy.
The power plant has a net capacity of approximately 22 MW of electricity, equivalent to powering up to 4,310 homes. The plant also produces steam which is provided to the adjacent sawmill. By using bark – a byproduct of sawmill operations – and residual forest biomass to produce renewable energy, SFC is contributing to emissions reduction goals and improving forest health in the region.
Pascal Turcotte, plant manager at SFC commented, “We are pleased to announce the extension of our contract term with Hydro‑Québec for another 25 years. With this agreement in place, we remain focused on our goal of optimizing operations and generating long-term value at SFC. Together with Hydro‑Québec, we are committed to building Quebec’s bioeconomy, creating stable jobs for local communities and meeting Quebec’s decarbonization objectives.”
Yannick Baillargeon, Prefect of the MRC Domaine du Roy, commented, “We are pleased that Hydro-Québec has renewed the agreement as it supports the development of biomass resources for the production of clean energy and the bioeconomy in our region.”
