Tesla will deliver world's first premium electric sedan to initial customers this month

It has been one heck of a summer so far for American entrepreneur Elon Musk. Still fresh off the success of sending the world's first commercial delivery vehicle to the International Space Station, the seemingly tireless visionary is poised to deliver the world's first premium electric sedan to its first buyers on 22 June.

Musk will personally hand the keys to early Model S reservation holders at a ceremony to he held at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California.

A webcast of the event will be shown beginning at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time, with presentations by Musk, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen, and CTO JB Straubel to begin at 3 p.m.

Unveiled to the public in 2009, Tesla now has more than 10,000 reservations for Model S and plans to produce and deliver 20,000 vehicles per year beginning in 2013.

Model S is the first premium sedan designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle.

Equipped with Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain, the company said Model S provides instant torque and smooth acceleration from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds, while still delivering a new record for electric vehicle range of 265 miles.

With the most energy dense battery pack in the industry and best-in-class aerodynamics, Model S has the longest range of any production electric car in the world, the company continued in a written statement.

The Model S seats five adults and two children in optional rear-facing jump seats, and has class-leading cargo space, thanks to careful design and a second trunk under the hood.

The centerpiece of the dash is a 17” touchscreen with 3G connectivity, putting streaming radio, web browsing and navigation at the driver’s fingertips. Model S has three battery pack options of 40, 60 or 85 kWh, and can be recharged using any conventional outlet.

In other new, Musk, who serves as CEo both of Tesla and SpaceX, welcomed NASA administrator Charles Bolden to California Thursday, where the two addressed the more than 1,000 employees who helped design, launch and safely recover the company's Dragon capsule in May following its trip to the space station.

"NASA has its sights set on reaching an asteroid and Mars and commercial space companies like SpaceX are helping make that possible by taking over the challenging transportation of cargo to low Earth orbit," Bolden said. "The International Space Station is the key to our human spaceflight efforts right now and SpaceX's successful resupply demonstration mission helped ensure it can achieve its full potential. We look forward to Dragon becoming a regular visitor to the station."

The trip to Hawthorne, California followed a visit by Bolden and Musk Wednesday to the SpaceX

Rocket Development Facility in McGregor, Texas, where they viewed the most recently recovered Dragon capsule. The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean May 31 following its 9-day mission to carry and return cargo to the space station.

Bolden also had the opportunity to view some of the 1,367 pounds of cargo the Dragon spacecraft returned to Earth. Dragon currently is the only spacecraft capable of returning a significant quantity of science experiments and cargo from the station.
