Clean Power Hydrogen completes Site Acceptance Test for MFE110 electrolyser

UK-based green hydrogen technology and manufacturing company CPH2 has announcedd that Level 3 of the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) for its MFE110 electrolyser at Northern Ireland Water’s site in Belfast has been successfully completed.

The final stage of the SAT for the MFE110 involved successfully verifying the safe and fully automated startup, operation, performance, and shutdown of the unit to the pre-determined specification at NIW site.

The MFE technology operated at scale on a customer site for the first time, producing high purity hydrogen and oxygen in a commercial environment. This final stage of the SAT was completed and independently witnessed by Lagan MEICA Limited (Lagan), the principal contractor, and ARUP, representing NIW.

The SAT demonstrated the MFE110 producing high purity hydrogen of 99.999mol percent over prolonged period and 99.7wt percent oxygen. The hydrogen generated is of fuel cell grade purity (ISO 14687).

This was Northern Ireland’s first production of pure hydrogen and oxygen generated reliably by an electrolyser at scale, a key market for CPH2. It will help to unlock significant opportunities for NIW’s decarbonisation efforts, as well as highlight the transformative potential of high purity oxygen across the wider wastewater treatment industry.

With regards to safety, the SAT demonstrated compliance with health and safety requirements for deploying an electrolyser within a public utility.

SAT Level 3 followed successful pre-commissioning checks (Level 1) and functional tests (Level 2) at NIW’s site. The MFE110 will play an important role in NIW’s efforts to decarbonise its operations and explore transformational potential high purity oxygen in wastewater treatment.

The successful test is a significant milestone for CPH2 and paves the way toward full commercialisation. It marks the first time CPH2’s scaled MFE technology has been fully operational and functioning at a customer’s site, providing further validation that MFE technology works at scale as the company progresses with the build of the first flagship MFE220 1MW system.

The success of the MFE110, culminating in the recent SAT, has provided valuable insights for developing CPH2’s flagship MFE220, a 1MW system. Work is already underway on the final design and build, with Factory Acceptance Testing of the first MFE220 unit expected in H2 2025.

The Company has now entered its Commerciality Phase, focusing on key near-term milestones - delivering MFE220 units for its existing customer contracts, activating and supporting licensees, growing the commercial pipeline and continued technology and product improvement.

“We are delighted that the MFE110 has successfully completed the final SAT level and that we now have a fully-fledged operational unit in the field” said Jon Duffy, CEO of CPH2. “Our customer producing hydrogen and oxygen at its site using our scaled MFE technology is a significant milestone and proves that our technology is a current solution to green hydrogen production. It is a strong start to our next phase of commercialisation, with the team now laser-focused on advancing the MFE220. We appreciate the guidance and support from Lagan MEICA Ltd and are incredibly grateful to our customer Northern Ireland Water, recipient of the Company’s first MFE110, for their unwavering support and patience.”
