Chinese firm will build 7 new hydro plants in Myanmar

China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) , which is currently one of the biggest producers of power in China will construct the 7 plants in Myanmar along with the government of the country. The project it is estimated will in total generate 13,360 MW of electricity. This would be almost twice as large in terms of capacity to the currently largest project in the country which was undertaken with MDX Group from Thailand. This project which will be completed in 2012 will see 85% of its power diverted to Thailand and is valued at 6 billion USD. Myanmar currently suffers under extreme poverty due to sanctions and has recently moved its capital. There are also some further cooperation deals with Chinese firms to explore oil resources. At current there are numerous other foreign oil firms operating in the country.

Chinese companies will also work on the Upper Thanlwin hydro scheme as well as the Tarhasan project which is already under construction. These will also be conducted on a joint venture basis, many countries in the region are eager to leverage the natural power resources of Myanmar which in terms of potential vastly out scale demand at the moment.
