Especially American companies have been seeking their fortune in the stock market, with large amounts of money needed to secure leases to land and conduct drilling the market provides a great mechanism to raise capital.
Amongst those companies which are listed are Calpine Corporation , Constellation Energy Group, IdaCorp, Nevada Geothermal Power Inc, Ormat Technologies, Raser Technologies, PG& E Corp, Polaris Geothermal, Sierra Geothermal Power Corp, U.S Geothermal Inc, Western GeoPower Corp, and WFI Industries. Most of the companies are based in the western United States with their projects also based there. Notable exceptions are Polaris Geothermal which is developing project in Nicargua and WFI Industries which operates out of Indiana. Western GeoPower Corp is also operating in Bristish Columbia. The age of the company also ranges from companies such as Constellation Energy Group which was founded in 1906 to U.S. Geothermal Inc which was founded in 2002 or Raser Technologies founded in 2003. Adding to this are different ownership structures and listing on different stock exchanges such as the NASDAQ as well as the NYSE.
One thing which these stocks do have in common is that the industry is heating up and these could be the next in a wave of investment. Even though the industry has plenty of experience there is still much potential which is going to only increase with more legislation benefiting renewable energy.
