MIT study shows huge potential for geothermal power in the United States

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has presented a study which looked at the potential to use geothermal energy as an alternative source of energy for the United States.  The study which is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy has found that a “substantial portion” of energy for electricity needed in the US could be supplied by so called heat mining at “competitive prices and minimal environmental impact.” Geothermal energy has not been seriously considered as a power source for the last 30 years, however with high oil prices and renewable and alternative energies flourishing it’s feasibility is being reexamined.  Currently the United States is already the world’s largest producer, with plants primarily in the western parts of the country. Other countries which at current have significant geothermal power developments are Iceland and Japan.

 

Geothermal power offers several key advantages in that is it more widely available then previously thought , and can be utilized by drilling wells and letting water flow create a heat exchanger. This method does not require any fuel and unlike wind and solar works 24 hours a day without interruption. There is also a smaller impact on the surface environment as the process takes place below ground and needs very little equipment above the surface.

Challenges remain to make the technology more widely available to drill down the 5000 feet which are required. However already geothermal power generates more mW’s then wind and solar put together in the United States.
