Tajikistan looks to hydro power for economic development

The country of Tajikistan is looking to invest over $1 billion USD into hydro electric power generation according to Tajik President Emomail Rakhmon. It is hoped that foreign investment can be attracted to the country to complete a project in Rogun which began in 1976. The Rogun Project has hit many snags along the way and it is hoped that RAO UES, A Russian firm will be able to come in and finish the project at a price tag of 1.2 billion USD. As the country has huge untapped energy resources in hydro electric form and is currently one of the poorest nations in the region this is seen as a key initiative to bring jobs and investment to the country. Aluminum smelter companies are at current interested following a model similar to that of Iceland of bringing in energy intensive industries to a region with excess energy supplies.
