Zambia plans $1 billion USD hydro power plant

The deal will be supported by the local mining firms who are keen to alleviate power outages. The Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station project is planned for 750 MW of hydroelectric power. The price of the project has gone up by 33% from $750 million USD to $1 billion USD. The World Bank's financing arm International Finance Corporation is also invloved and has been acting as a supervisor to the project.

Currently only 400 MW are being supplied to the mining companies with 150 MW of power being imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Finance Minister Ng'andu Magande was quoted as saying: ."So far two of the mining companies have told us they are prepared to invest in energy because they use the energy," "We met a few days ago and they told us they are prepared to invest in the Kafue Gorge Lower project,".

It is hoped that this will be the push which the project needs to get kicked off and started back on course.
