Egyptian cement sector launches new waste to energy plant

SCGC is one of Egypt’s largest cement producers and has been investing money in environmental initiatives for several years. The new waste to energy facility, developed by the group at Kattameya cement plant, was officially launched by Mr Bruno Carre, Suez Cement CEO and H.E. Laila Iskandar, the Egyptian Minister of State for Environmental Affairs on February 16th, having taken almost a year to complete.

The 5 million euro project is part of SCGC’s strategy to boost the amount of energy generated from refuse-derived fuels (RDF’s). It will process an estimated 35Kt of waste providing 20 percent of the fuel required by the cement plant.

“Thanks to the new facility we are on track to reach our goal of producing 20 percent of our energy fuel needs using alternative fuels by 2017” said Mr Carre. “Suez Cement is strongly determined to continue making meaningful and valuable contributions to the socio-economic development of Egypt.”

The new facility will allow the company to diversify its energy mix, lower its dependence on fossil fuels and put Egyptian waste to good use. It is part of a comprehensive strategy to replace traditional fuels with waste fuels and other forms of renewable power. The facility is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 39,600 tons per year while also ensuring local production of high quality cement for the Egyptian construction industry.
