“This reckless proposal would undermine decades of progress and threatens the UK’s energy security. It would lock us into more expensive energy prices” said Gemma Grimes, Director of Policy and Delivery at trade association Solar Energy UK. “Solar power is now the cheapest source of electricity in the UK. In contrast, our ongoing dependence on fossil fuels has pushed up the price of power and heating.”
The Climate Change Act has provided a stable framework for innovation, job creation and emissions reduction. Removing it would betray the British public, businesses, and communities working tirelessly to build a sustainable economy, Solar Energy UK argues. Power from renewable energy has been cheaper than fossil fuels for years.
The solar and battery energy storage industry employs thousands and contributes billions of pounds to the economy. Repealing the law would jeopardise this growth, destabilise markets and send a dangerous signal that action on climate change is optional. It would also be a U-turn on the position held by the Conservative Party since the law’s inception 17 years ago.
Solar Energy UK is urging all political leaders to reject this regressive move and reaffirm their commitment to climate leadership. The UK must accelerate its transition to clean energy, not abandon it.
The trade association says it stands ready to work with government, industry, and civil society to defend the Climate Change Act and ensure a prosperous, low-carbon future for all.
