Vestas introduces new V182-7.2 MW turbine

Wind turbine firm Vestas has introduced its new V182-7.2 MW wind turbine, utilising the proven EnVentus platform, increasing annual energy production (AEP) by up to six percent and lowering the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCoE) compared to the V172-7.2 MW depending on site conditions.

The demand for affordable, secure, and sustainable energy continues to grow in an uncertain world, where successful energy projects must deliver strong economics while performing reliably under grid constraints and volatile market conditions.

Equipped with a larger rotor while maintaining the same rating as its predecessor, the V182-7.2 MW features a larger rotor-to-rating ratio with a specific rating of 277 W/m2 which improves the turbine’s capacity factor by up to two percent compared to the V172-7.2 MW. This enables a greater share of power generation in lower wind speeds during periods when electricity prices are typically higher, improving capture prices by up to three percent, easing grid congestion and supporting stronger long-term returns for project owners and investors.

“The V182-7.2 MW is designed to deliver consistent, high-performance output that supports strong project economics and long-term bankability for our customers in an evolving energy environment, where predictability and financial resilience are critical to project success” said Felix Henseler, Vestas' Chief Technology and Operations Officer (CTOO). “Built on the proven EnVentus platform, this turbine reinforces our commitment to continuous platform evolution through targeted design enhancements that create meaningful customer value while maintaining the reliability of a validated platform. The V182-7.2 MW also underlines our ability to efficiently scale competitive solutions that enable us to deliver affordable, secure and sustainable energy to communities across the globe.”

The V182-7.2 MW is globally applicable. It is particularly well suited for low-to-medium wind sites across Europe, Australia, South Africa as well as North and South America. However, with the EnVentus platform already installed in more than 25 countries, it is relevant across a much broader range of markets.

The EnVentus platform utilises proven system designs from Vestas’ 2 MW, 4 MW, and 9 MW technologies. More than 15 GW of EnVentus capacity has been installed globally and the platform continues to evolve through incremental enhancements.
