Woodland BIO Using Forest Residuals to Produce Sustainable Gasoline

Earlier this year, Woodland BIO announced a $50,000 grant award from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture as part of the nation’s first Agricultural Innovation Grant Program.

"This grant represents a significant milestone for our company and underscores the importance of our mission to innovate within the agricultural sector," the company said in a press release.

In making the announcement, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said, "Our farmers form the backbone of our economy here in Pennsylvania - they put food on our tables and in our stores and restaurants every day. If we want to compete and succeed as a Commonwealth, then we have to invest in them.

"We are announcing investments in game-changing projects that are fueling the future of farming in Pennsylvania - and giving farmers and ag producers the tools they need to get ahead. The future of our economic success and opportunity runs through our farmlands, and we are going to continue to invest in agricultural innovation in my Administration."

The Agricultural Innovation Grant Program aims to enhance conservation and implement clean energy solutions across Pennsylvania. Woodland BIO's project was selected for its innovative use of forest residuals to produce sustainable gasoline, a solution that promises to revitalize Pennsylvania’s forest products industry while providing essential income for forest maintenance and sustainability.

The grant funds will be applied towards the engineered designs for the company's Tioga County facility, which is expected to convert roughly 1,000 tons per day of forest residuals into 42,000 gallons per day of 87-octane gasoline.

This sustainable gasoline is chemically identical to what is currently on the market, making it compatible with existing vehicles and infrastructure, offering a seamless transition to a more sustainable fuel source.

"This innovative process not only strengthens the local economy by creating 50-100 well-paying jobs at the first facility but also offers circular benefits for both the community and the environment," the company said.

In the current system, when one buys a gallon of gasoline, the majority of that money goes to extractors and refiners that are outside the region. In the new system, when a customer pulls up to the pump and chooses Woodland BIO gasoline, that money stays within the regional economy. It supports local businesses, employees, and landowners, who can then recirculate that money back into Main Street, fostering economic resilience and community growth.

By utilizing forest residuals, the company provides additional revenue streams for forest management, enhancing ecosystem health and sustainability. The facility will also contribute to carbon emission reductions, supporting broader environmental goals and promoting a circular future.

“This grant is a landmark moment for Woodland BIO,” said Luca Pandolfi, Founder of Woodland BIO. “It validates years of hard work and dedication to developing sustainable energy solutions. Our biomass-to-gasoline facility in Tioga County is a catalyst for community growth, with the potential to invigorate the local economy while driving positive environmental change.

"We extend our gratitude to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for this endorsement and to all our partners and supporters who have been instrumental in reaching this milestone. As we continue to innovate and expand, we remain committed to driving sustainable practices and fostering economic development in Pennsylvania."
