The California-based luxury automaker beat independent sales estimates by about 20 percent and increased its quarterly sales rate from the third quarter by about 25 percent.
Notably, Tesla's fourth-quarter sales bested both the Nissan Leaf EV, which sold 6,534 units during the period, and the Chevrolet Volt, which sold 6,334.
However, for the year, Tesla was the third most purchased EV in the US, selling 22,300 vehicles, while the Nissan sold 22,610 Leafs and Chevrolet for 23,094 Volts.
