India looks to set up new hydroelectric power plant projects in Jammu and Kashmir

The mega scale projects could generate up to 16.4 GW of power in these two areas. The plan would be for a series of hydroelectric power plants in the Jammu and Kashmir regions. These power plants would be located on the Jhelum, Chenab, Indus and Ravi river basins. Asia is already home to ever increasing tension over water, with China diverting rives north from India to funnel water into their own hydroelectric projects. Each country is trying to make their claims on the scarce sources of water by building hydroelectric projects which can power the development of their respective countries.

Water is vastly intertwined in the development of these countries as there is a chronic shortage of water for people as well as power. The rivers in total would have 20 GW of power generation potential of. Thus far 1869 MW have already been installed. There has been a lack of private funding because of the scale of the projects and the geopolitical tensions in this part of India. This has made such long term projects all but impossible without government involvement.
