Karuma Hydroelectric power project to start in 2009 in Uganda

The president of Uganda has made the project a priority for the development of his country and will see 250 MW added to the national grid.

The dam itself will be located downstream from the Bujagali power project which we reported on last year. It will be on the River Nile. As the engineering design phase is already drawing to a close now the next issue which is being looked at is funding for the project. The funding looks to be a combination of public and private funding with a Norwegian company called Norpark set to join the Ugandan government. In total the project will cost about 450 million USD.

Also in the works will be World Bank funding which from experience on other projects can be quiet difficult to obtain. Compared to the Bujagali project which was 750 million the project is quiet a bit cheaper, adding to this is that the government claims to have already set aside funds of 100 million USD. With another small scale power hydro power plant Isimba generating 100 MW under development Uganda is fast becoming a model for hydro power development in Africa. Still there is a lack of 110 MW in the national grid, which has hampered industrial growth.
