As always, in new book, WEF's Schwab looks forward toward a new Europe

In his new book, The Re-emergence of Europe, Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, strikes a familiar pose: That of an analytical man trying to figure out just how Europe -- and by extension the world -- can get out of the latest fix its found itself it.
As always, in new book, WEF

And has held true in past -- even at the depth of the most recent economic crisis -- Schwab refuses to wring his hands, but rather looks at a wide range of potential solutions, running each through their paces from a social, political and economic perspective. Not for Schwab the short-term fix; after five decades of involve in European and world affairs, the esteemed professor is a clear-eyed believer on a certain, thoughtful population in the US (where this article is being written) call "the long now." Among the questions he tackles: • How can Europe remain true to its social democratic traditions and yet return to the top of global competitiveness? • How can it best make use of its human capital to become a leader again in innovation and sustainability? Too much of a realist to pretend that Europe has passed through the pain barrier of the lingering economic slowdown, Schwab nevertheless insists that greater integration and structural reform must be undertaken. The challenge for Europe’s leaders, he sees, is to present a vision that is bold yet inclusive, that takes account of younger people’s aspirations and leaves no one behind. Optimistic that this can be achieved, he concludes Europe “will even surprise us positively” again. The arrival of Schwab's book of course reminds us that the 2013 World Economic Forum is just around the corner. This year's gathering at Davos-Klosters, Switzerland is set for 23-27 January and will revolved around the theme of "Resilient Dynamism". This year, many of the sessions will deal with the issue of sustainability, climate change, the future of energy, accelerating critical infrastructure development, building partnerships for investment, and how to leverage the rapid and far-reaching advances in science, technology and medicine.
