The report shows that:
A record-breaking 1.89 GW of rooftop solar was installed in the first half of 2026, 30 per cent more than the preceding six months, as households flock to cheap, reliable solar energy.
More than 276,000 home batteries were installed, 52 per cent more than in the previous six months, as Australians seek to store solar power on the back of the government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Programme.
Australia is in the middle of a household solar boom, with more than 4.5 million Australian homes and small businesses equipped with a rooftop solar system and more than 700,000 with a battery installed, while electric vehicle sales have also accelerated.
There is now more rooftop solar capacity in Australia than the capacity of all the country’s remaining coal-fired power stations combined.
Solar and batteries aren’t just driving down power bills in Australian homes. For years, rooftop solar has helped push down demand from the grid in the middle of the day and now, home batteries are doing the same for evenings. This improves grid reliability and reduces the impact of evening price spikes.
The historic growth in household renewables is a win for both consumers and the country - delivering value and reliability for Australians and greater security for the Australian energy supply.
