Maine PUC moves forward with LS Power Grid’s transmission solution to deliver renewable energy from Northern Maine

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has issued an order to move forward with LS Power Grid Maine’s transmission solution that will deliver renewable energy from Aroostook County, Maine into the New England grid, consisting of more than 100 miles of new 345 kV transmission lines and multiple substations.

LS Power Grid Maine’s project scope will include the build out, which will deliver power from Longroad Energy’s 1000 MW King Pine Wind project. The location of the new facilities will be determined through an open and transparent siting process.

The projects were selected by the Maine Public Utilities Commission via competitive bid processes that considered parameters including the benefits to Maine ratepayers and the technical as well as financial viability of the proposed project developers. The Commission’s decision advances the state of Maine’s ambitious clean energy and climate goals while delivering economic benefits for the state, including cost savings from a competitive selection process, tax revenues and environmental benefits. Toward the cost savings, the project involved the collaboration of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which agreed in December 2022 to contract for a portion of the projects.

“LS Power is excited that the Commission voted unanimously to approve finalising contracts to deliver cost-effective renewable energy, create jobs and provide clean energy benefits to Aroostook County and the whole of Maine” said Paul Thessen, President of LS Power Development. “We look forward to working with stakeholders as we move this project forward and we are excited to be a part of building Maine’s clean energy future.”
