Baghdad to be powered by solar energy

Finally, good news from Iraq: the Minister of Electricity of the country has announced that his ministry will carry out a project to supply Baghdad with solar electricity. Not bad for a country that sits on oil.

In war times good news are not often heard of. However, this week hope was reported from Iraq in the form of solar power. This technology will be used by the Government in the reconstruction of Iraq's capital, Baghdad. The Minister of Electricity, Dr. Kareem Waheed, said that the first project would kickstart in 2007, Iraq Directory reported.

He added that the Ministry of Electricity would cooperate with the Ministry of Industry to carry out the next phase of the project which includes supplying Baghdad's residential areas with electricity.

Dr. Waheed indicated that the project will include illuminating the city's "public squares, bridges and streets" with solar energy, for which the Iraqi government will welcome Iraqi investors' funding. This is undoubtedly a good example of how renewable technologies can help in reconstruction eras.
