AGL Energy has achieved financial close for 155MW of solar energy plant at Nygan and Broken Hill in New South Wales
First Solar poised to deliver Australia’s largest utility-scale solar projects

First Solar has been engaged by AGL Energy to construct a 102MW solar plant at Nyngan, New South Wales, and a 53MW project at Broken Hill. The two projects will be the largest utility-scale solar plants in Australia when completed and are expected to meet the energy needs of over 50,000 average New South Wales homes.

AGL has completed its financial arrangements for the projects and First Solar has executed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts to supply its advanced thin-film PV modules and provide EPC services. The company will also provide maintenance support for five years once the facilities are operational.

The Commonwealth Government has supported the projects with $166.7 million of funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) alongside an additional $64.9 million in funding from the NSW Government bringing the total cost of the project to approximately $450 million.

“The Nyngan and Broken Hill solar projects will be Australia's largest utility-scale solar projects, respectively, and demonstrate that utility-scale solar is a proven, bankable source of power generation in Australia today” said First Solar's Vice President of Business Development for Asia Pacific, Jack Curtis. “We are thrilled to be partnering with AGL in delivering the solar projects, both of which are of major significance for regional New South Wales and the Australian energy sector. These projects will play an important part in the growing acceptance of utility-scale solar PV, and we applaud the Commonwealth Government and the NSW Government for their vision and commitment to the sector.”

Construction of the Nyngan project is expected to commence in January 2014 with commercial operation expected by mid-2015. Construction of the Broken Hill project will commence six months later in July 2014 with commercial operation commencing before the end of 2015. The projects are expected to generate around 360,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year upon completion and should add nearly two percent to the gross regional product of each of the two communities. First Solar is engaged in discussions with local companies hoping to become involved and recently held subcontractor forums in Dubbo, Nyngan and Cobar which attracted over 100 local companies. Around 300 construction jobs are expected in Nyngan alone with a further 150 jobs in Broken Hill.
