The rollout will begin this year with installations at 22 stores, followed by an additional 22 stores in 2026. Each rooftop solar PV system will comprise of 288 solar panels and is expected to generate an average of 95,500 kWh annually, supplying approximately 30% of a store’s electricity needs. In total, the project will deliver an installed capacity of 6.3MW for Aldi’s Ireland stores.

Aldi is investing €5 million in the project, which will double Greenvolt Next retail PV sector output in Ireland in 2025, positioning the company for further growth across and strengthening its position as the leading renewable energy supplier.

João Manso Neto, CEO, Greenvolt Group says, “By leveraging existing assets such as large rooftop spaces, major retailers like Aldi can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, gain energy independence, and enhance cost efficiency. This partnership in Ireland further strengthens our position in that market."

The €5 million initiative is part of ALDI’s broader commitment to finding greener, more energy-efficient solutions that reduce environmental impact and support long-term cost management. By lowering electricity consumption and reducing energy costs, the installations will help the business to safeguard energy supply, reduce dependency on the national grid and manage external price pressures—all part of Aldi’s commitments to operate and grow sustainably, while delivering innovations and efficiencies that help to deliver unbeatable low prices for customers.

Rachel Nugent, Sustainability Manager at ALDI Ireland, said, “At ALDI, we are committed to continually investing in green solutions that improve energy efficiency and reduce our environmental impact. We’re excited to launch this solar retrofit program, beginning with 22 stores in 2025 and continuing with even more in 2026.”
