New solar wafer factory in Spain

DC Wafers, a company based in Castilla y León, will invest 46 million euros in a silicon growth and wafer cut plant, which will become Spain's first. It will be located in Valdelafuente (León) and is expected to enter into operation in 2008.

In the first phase, to be completed by next year, 26 million euros will be invested in order to put the plant manufacturing potential at 30 MW. At a later stage, DC Wafers plans to invest 20 m euros more, which will leave the total yearly capacity at 60-90 MW. The company will employ around 150 people in this project.

The project has already been submitted to the regional energy authority (EREN). DC Wafers' Technical Director, Mr Ismael Guerrero, has highlighted the innovative nature of the project, and has added that the company has reached several research agreement with high tech companies from different countries and a University in Castilla León, the region where the project will be based.

DC Wafers was created in 2005 with the purpose of promoting research into the solar wafer manufacturing process. By the end of 2006, Inova Capital, a venture capital firm, increased its company share ownership to 15%, which has impulsed the project.
