The first Solar Decathlon Europe to be held in Madrid in 2010

The organizers of Solar Decathlon, a competition that has been held in the US only so far, have agreed on the date of the first European version of the event, which will be directed by Sergio Vega from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). The popular Solar Decathlon is organized by the United States' Department of Energy, and aims to attract universities from all over the world. They are asked to design and build a prototype of self-suficient home that is able to run on solar power only. The home is also expected to function with energy efficient technology before being assessed by a group of experts.

The first European edition will be jointly organized with Spain's Housing Department, and it will be directed by Mr Sergio Vega Sánchez, a Professor at UPM's Architecture school and Project Manager from the American Project Management Institute.

The Solar Decathlon is undoubtedly a good mechanism to ensure that in the future people can live in low-consumption and low-emission homes, by adding visibility and testing feasibility of the technology available.
