Mr Pier Carlo Cuscianna, head of the Vatican's department of technical services, said Catholic News Service that he had in mind other sites throughout Vatican City where solar panels could be installed in the future.
Some prototypes will be tested before installation. An Environmental Impact Assessment will also be carried out.
The aim of the project is to reduce the city's carbon footprint, and this will be done by means of around 1,000 solar panels.
