World's first "solar city" announced for Arizona

 

Arup will design it and it will be able to have 300,000 people relying only on the sun's energy during daytime.

 It will be built in the Phoenix area in Arizona and it will include not only solar power but also high-tech and commercial developments. The city will produce electricity for the grid during the day but it will have to import energy during the night. Engineers hope to be able to deal with the high temperatures and lots of dust in the area in the design.0

“We’ve just signed contracts to do a masterplan in Pheonix and that will be the world’s first completely solar city”, said Mr Gary Lawrence, Urban Strategy Leader at Arup.

Arup is not new to ecocities, as the firm is at the moment building one in Dongtan in China.
