Indian CSP industry given boost by first CSP Today conference

Dr Abdullah, the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy of India, demonstrated his ministry’s commitment to the concentrated solar thermal power industry by opening the inaugural CSP Today India event yesterday in New Delhi.

The 1st Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit India was described by CSP Today founder Belen Gallego as “a huge success”, with over 275 people attending. She added that the event is “the fastest growing meeting place for Concentrated Solar Thermal professions” in India.

The event continues today and has attracted global companies in the CSP industry and international institutions such as Siemens, AREVA, Alstom, SCHOTT, Abengoa, Acciona, SENER, ACS Cobra, Lauren, Bosch, GE, Solutia, World Bank, International Finance Corporation and many others. Organisers report that 40% of delegates are from outside India, coming to find out about the last developments of India’s New Solar Mission.

Visionary Indian companies are also present, including CSP developers such as Cargo Infrastructures, Sunborne, Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Lanco, Entegra and more were also among the attendees.

In the ceremony of the lighting of the lamp to open the event, Dr Abdullah spoke to the audience of the event about his experience in Spain and how he personally thought that CSP was key to the Indian energy future.

India’s ‘New Solar Mission’ is the most ambitious solar energy development plan in the world. By 2022 the country aims to be generating 20 GW of energy from sunlight. Going by International Energy Agency forecasts - this will make India the producer of almost three-quarters of the world’s total solar energy output.

This plan is a strong indication that the Indian government is committed to solar and that going forward they will have the will and the motivation to continue to support this industry – something that is lacking in many nations.

“With both Indian and international companies taking central stage in New Delhi, this event has delved deep into the main CSP technologies and how they work, how they are applied and developed. Furthermore, the full extent of the implications of doing business in India has been discussed,” concluded Gallego.
