Spain leads the way in solar thermal electric power

The recent publication of the CSP Today World Map 2010 leaves no doubt that Spain is the largest and most important solar thermal electric power in the world. The map was presented during the Fourth International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit EU (CSP Today 2010) in Seville (Spain) mid-November.

The CSP Today World Map 2010 includes an itemised list of all the MW-sized concentrated solar thermal power plants in the world that are either announced, under construction or in operation. The map was commissioned for the second year running by CSP Today, as part of Fourth International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit campaign, and it contains a world map with the location of the main plants, as well as a detailed USA, Spain and Australia close-up maps.

Outside Spain, the world map shows just one single solar thermal electric plant in operation in Germany. The rest are projects that are under construction or still at the planning stage. In the first instance, the projects comprise seven plants, one located in America, two in Europe, one in Asia, and one in Africa. Meanwhile, there are 26 plants in the pipeline, mainly spread across Africa and Asia.

Against this global backdrop, Spain has more plants than the rest of the world combined. There are 16 solar thermal electric plants operating in Spain, 16 are being built, and a further 32 are at the planning stage and have been pre-allocated feed-in tariffs prior to being commissioned.

CSP Today Awards

Spanish companies were also recognised for their achievements in the solar thermal electric field during the CSP Today awards ceremony at the same event. ACS Cobra won the award for the best increased dispatchability solution of the year, Abengoa Solar was given the best emerging markets achievement award, while Abener Teyma was named EPC contractor of the year.

The Valencia-based company Schubert and Salzer won the award for best CSP technology supplier of the year, while SkyFuel was given the CSP commercialised technology innovation award. Cargo Power and Infrastructure was also singled out as best newcomer, with the veteran, Foster Wheeler, was handed the award for best CSP engineering firm in 2010.

The Fourth International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit EU closed with a record turnout, attracting over 650 people from 33 countries.
