The Environment and Water Resources Minister of Australia, Mr Malcom Turnbull, has announced that the Australian Photovoltaic Rebate Program (PVRP) will receive an additional $150m dollars of funding next year (2007/2008 budget).
The money will double the current rebate for domestic solar energy, to a maximum of $8,000. The new scheme will also support the growth of solar power markets dedicated to schools and other community buildings.
"Many Australians want to do their bit for the environment and reduce the impact of climate change," said Mr Turnbull. "The program makes solar power more affordable by providing thousands of Australians with rebates up to $8,000 for installing solar panels in their homes," he added.
The Minister expects to see the number of rooftop systems doubled in the next five years, benefiting around 14,000 households with the new legislation.
