Good week for solar, as US government strengthens backing for research

Building off SunShot Initiative investments in concentrating solar power announced last week, the United States Energy Department has unveiled five new research projects to accelerate innovations that could lower the cost of photovoltaic and concentrating solar power technologies.
Good week for solar, as US government strengthens backing for research

These investments will enable collaborative research teams from industry, universities, and national laboratories to work together at the Department’s Scientific User Facilities, a national network of unique facilities that provide over 10,000 scientists and engineers each year with open access to some of the best instruments and tools in the world, including x-ray sources, accelerators, supercomputers and nanoscale research centres.

“The past decade has seen explosive growth in the global solar energy market. American companies are helping to lead this dramatic progress – driving lower costs and introducing new, better performing technologies into the marketplace. These collaborative projects announced today harness the immense capabilities of our Scientific User Facilities to invent and deploy new technologies that will strengthen American manufacturing and technical competitiveness,” said Secretary Chu. “As part of President Obama’s all-of-the-above energy strategy, advanced solar energy technologies are helping to provide clean, renewable electricity for homes and businesses across the country while diversifying the United States’ energy economy.”

The five research projects selected today fall under two levels, including:

Establishing Scientific User Facility research partnerships

Under this level, two projects have been awarded a total of $900,000 to establish research partnerships and carry out research using existing tools at Energy Department Scientific User Facilities. Based in Berkeley, California, PLANT PV will partner with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Molecular Foundry to develop 3D mapping tools for higher performing thin film solar material. The University of Colorado will use tools at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to research high-temperature inexpensive materials for concentrating solar power technologies.

Developing a new Scientific User Facility instrument

At this stage, three projects, totalling a $2.6 million investment, have been selected to establish full research programs at a Scientific User Facility that will result in new tool development, expanding the capability of each facility to conduct advanced solar energy research. Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories will partner with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies in New Mexico to improve the efficiency of thin film photovoltaic materials, while Arizona State University will use x-ray technologies at Argonne National Laboratory to address solar cell material performance. Additionally, Stanford University will partner with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to research inexpensive ways to print solar cells.

A full list of projects is available here.

These projects are part of the Energy Department’s broader efforts to encourage collaboration among engineers and scientists who are developing advanced solar power technologies and research teams using the tools and expertise of the Scientific User Facilities. By leveraging the skills and resources of private industry, universities and national laboratories, these projects will help rapidly apply fundamental scientific discoveries to existing product lines and projects, accelerating higher levels of performance and greater cost reductions across the industry.

The SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national effort to make solar energy cost competitive with other forms of energy by the end of the decade. Inspired by President Kennedy's "Moon Shot" program that put the first man on the moon, the SunShot Initiative has created new momentum for the solar industry by highlighting the need for American competitiveness in the clean energy race.

When you buy jewelry, any jewelry, from the most expensive fine jewelry to inexpensive costume jewelry, you buy it because it is beautiful. The gleam of the metal and the shine or luster and fire of the gems appeal to your aesthetic sense of beauty, based on what you can afford. The better the jewelry, the longer you want to wear it, perhaps even for rest of your life, and the longer you want it to have that like new glow, although some metals and finishes attain a warm patina with wear. What you don't want, however, is scratched or gouged settings and dull gems. Accidents can happen, but all too often the jewelry is damaged by carelessness or not taking the few moments necessary to tend to the jewelry.
Shipping container to Hawaii
The main port of entry for imports is Honolulu at the island of Oahu. This harbor services the capitol city and is the normal import point for most goods that are brought into Hawaii by ship. If you are auto shipping to Hawaii and you have your vehicle sent to Honolulu it is possible to transport it to another island by ferry without having to pay another duty or import tax. The answer is not very likely if you are similar to me who knows everywhere in the south like the back of my hand, including London, and only associates the Midlands and the North, apart from Liverpool and the Beatles, with dark, Satanic mills, terrace houses as per Coronation Street and relentless rain. Oh, I forgot about the beauties of the Lake District but there is still lots of rain. horror writer

Compare Electricity Supply
Finding a low rate plan is easier than ever when choosing the right place to compare them. These comparison tools are going to list all the rates based on what a person is currently using. There are some electric companies that will give their customers a better rate if they are using a lot of electricity in their home or business. Compare Electricity Supply

There are a number of points one should keep in mind when attempting to compare electricity rates in Texas. There is of course the basic parameter of price per kWh, which is what most people end up using to make their choice. This is, however, not necessarily the wisest way to make a selection.
